Something big might be coming to Cerritos. The city’s planning staff recently confirmed early talks with Macerich, the owner of Los Cerritos Center, to redevelop the former Sears site into a large scale mixed use community that could completely change how locals experience the city’s most visited retail hub.
The early concept features a mix of retail, restaurants, a new hotel, and about 375 market rate apartments built directly into the mall property. This new development would transform the long vacant Sears building into a vibrant lifestyle district with shops on the ground floor, residential homes above, and pedestrian friendly pathways that connect the entire campus.
City staff shared that they are preparing rezoning and development standards that may allow for buildings in the five to seven story range. The goal is to create a modern, sustainable community that supports Cerritos’ economic growth and meets state housing goals. If approved, the project would become one of the most significant developments in Cerritos history, redefining the skyline and introducing a new live work play lifestyle to the city.
This is part of a larger regional shift as aging mall sites across California are transformed into walkable mixed use centers. For Cerritos, this could mean new jobs, stronger property values, and a more connected local economy.
